Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024: all the news, trailers, and announcements

Much like backpacks and lunchboxes showing up in the seasonal aisle of your local Target, nothing heralds the end of summer like Opening Night Live. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, ONL is a video game showcase much like Summer Game Fest. It’s the event that kicks off Gamescom 2024 — a video game expo held primarily in Germany — and is traditionally the final video game event of the summer. This year, Xbox will show up in a big way with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

We’ll also see new info on the next entry in Sid Meier’s Civilization series and Marvel Rivals, while BioWare will continue to show off Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Here are all the trailers, news, and info coming out of Opening Night Live 2024.

  • Thanks, Geoff.

Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley shared a handy list of what’s going to be shown at the event. He promises there will be “many” new game announcements and surprises, too.

  • Here come the Pokémon microSD cards.

SanDisk is launching new Pokémon-branded microSD cards at Gamescom today. These new Pokémon microSD cards support up to 100MB/s read speeds and up to 90MB/s write speeds and are available through Western Digital’s online store.

No Nintendo Switch 2 at Gamescom.

Nintendo has confirmed to both Eurogamer and German site Games Wirtschaft that it won’t be attending this summer’s Gamescom event. The Nintendo Switch 2 was reportedly demonstrated to developers at Gamescom last year, so it’s very unlikely we’re going to get a repeat of that leak again. Recent reports suggest Nintendo is now targeting March 2025 for the Switch 2 launch.
